24 Hours in Burlington, VT
Burlington, VT is such a special place…with its breathtaking Lake Champlain waterfront, an abundance of nearby scenic hiking options, a walkable trendy downtown and eclectic breweries and eateries, I always look forward to spending time in this vibrant city when we visit our son at The University of Vermont.
If you only have 24 hours to visit, here is a great itinerary that takes advantage of the versatility and outdoor recreation this area offers.
Your day starts at the Courtyard Burlington Harbor Hotel right on Lake Champlain, waking up to this view…
My most favorite quick stop cafe for breakfast in Burlington is August First. They have the most amazing griddled maple biscuits served with maple butter and local berry jam. Their egg sandwiches are also delicious on freshly baked 7 grain bread. TIP: Before you leave, pick up a baguette for your afternoon picnic!
Full from breakfast, head south on Ethan Allen Highway to Mt. Philo and enjoy this scenic drive with beautiful farmlands and views of Lake Champlain.
Once you reach Mt. Philo, there is a small entrance fee at the parking lot since they maintain an auto road. If you have time, I recommend hiking to the summit via the Mt. Philo Western Loop Trail. The trail is mostly wooded with a steady incline, but when you reach the top it feels like the whole world opens up and you are rewarded with stunning summit views!
Be sure to spend some time relaxing and admiring the scenery from the scattered adirondack chairs.
If you would like a different view coming down, take the Devil’s Chair Trail to pass unusual rock formations and complete the 2.4 mile hike.
TIP: Hungry from hiking? Stop at Vermont Cookie Love for a famous creemee, some freshly baked cookies or a Lovewich ice cream sandwich- take some cookies to-go for later!
Next, head to Shelburne Farms! TIP: Stop at Sweet Roots Farm and Market on the way to pick up some local fresh fruit or veggies.
If you would like to picnic at Shelburne Farms, I recommend pre-ordering your food. Once you arrive at the Farm Store, you can pick up your goodies and be on your way to explore the beautiful farm! We really enjoyed the Shelburne Farms 1 yr sharp cheddar, Vermont-made Sidehill mango habanero jam and the beet/goat cheese salad. TIP: Bring a backpack to carry your lunch in while hiking.
Parking at the Welcome Center/Farm Store, take the left trail toward the Farm Barn-you will get a great view of the gorgeous barn from the front and eventually pass horses, sheep, cows and goats.
You can also go inside the barn to learn about their cheese making process and sometimes see it in action!
Once at the barn, you have your pick of trails. I recommend taking the Farm Trail to Lone Tree Hill where you’ll find the most perfect picnic spot with an expansive view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains.
Relax on the bench, take out your lunch from Shelburne Farm, baguette from August First and cookies from Vermont Cookie Love and enjoy your picnic with a view!
If you can tear yourself away from this incredible spot, continue on the loop to Sheep’s Knoll for more spectacular views… this time of Mt. Mansfield and the Green Mountains.
After exploring Shelburne Farms, treat yourself to a much deserved beverage on the outdoor patio at Fiddlehead Brewing Company. If you would rather a glass of wine, Shelburne Vineyard is right across the street.
In the late afternoon, stroll Church Street…the hub of Burlington…abuzz with shops, cafes, restaurants and lively street entertainment.
After shopping and browsing, take out dinner from one of the many restaurants on Church Street like Pascolo Ristorante, The Farmhouse Tap and Grill, Honey Road or Gaku Ramen and eat al fresco on the lawn of the Burlington waterfront. It is so peaceful to watch the sparkling waters of Lake Champlain with the silhouetted Adirondack mountains in the background.
If you are not quite ready for your day to end, take a kayak out on Lake Champlain and watch the stunning sunset from the water. The perfect way to end your day in Burlington, VT!
